What is a RIS?

A Radiology Information System (RIS) is a specialized software platform that manages key imaging workflow tasks such as scheduling, order tracking, documentation, and results reporting. Typically deployed on-premises or in the cloud, RIS platforms support communication between radiologists, technologists, and clinical staff, and are often integrated with PACS and EMR systems to streamline patient data access and image management. A well-implemented RIS helps reduce manual errors, improve turnaround times, and ensure a more coordinated patient experience across departments.

What is a PACS?

A Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is a medical imaging solution used to securely store, manage, and distribute diagnostic images across healthcare environments. Typically integrated with a Radiology Information System (RIS), PACS allows radiologists and clinicians to access and interpret images from any location via web-based or workstation viewers. By eliminating the need for film and supporting high-resolution image viewing, PACS plays a critical role in modern imaging workflows—improving speed, collaboration, and quality of care.

Vendor Neutral Archive

Data security and patient integrity have become mission-critical imperatives when selecting any new healthcare IT solution.  Roentgen Works RIS/PACS offers a state-of-the-art vendor neutral archive (VNA) architecture as its foundational infrastructure, ensuring unprecedented data integrity and seamless image management across disparate clinical workflows. The VNA backbone facilitates standardized DICOM and non-DICOM content consolidation while maintaining robust AES-256 data encryption protocols at rest and in transit, effectively eliminating proprietary data silos that historically impeded interoperability. Healthcare organizations benefit from enhanced disaster recovery capabilities, comprehensive audit trails for regulatory compliance, and intelligent lifecycle management that optimizes storage resources across your storage environments.
